SMARTWITNESS LAUNCH MULTI-CAMERA DVS COMPLIANCE PACKAGE AT CV SHOW

SmartWitness is launching a TfL approved multi-camera Safe System at the CV show which passes all the new safety laws being introduced for HGV fleets this year.

The SmartWitness Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Safe System is recommended by Transport for London (TfL) to meet the strict new safety measures being brought into force in October 2020.

Fleet owners must send photographic proof to TfL that they have met the minimum DVS requirements by October 2020 in order to get a permit. To achieve a minimum of one star, they must have at least a fully operational camera monitoring system, with sensor and driver alerts to improve indirect vision. Any vehicle over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London that does not comply to the DVS standard will receive a fine of £550 per day.

TfL have developed the new DVS rules to address the high number of collisions in London involving HGVs and people walking and cycling. DVS rules objectively measure the direct view through the windows of an HGV cab, with a star rating, from zero (poor) to five (excellent) which indicates the level of risk to people near the vehicle. The new TfL rules legislation states that vehicles with poor direct vision, and most HGVs fall into this category, should have indirect vision hardware fitted after the point of manufacture.

The SmartWitness DVS Safe System combines the latest 4G/LTE multi-camera recorder (SmartWitness CP4S), with an updated 4G LTE forward-facing HD camera, 120° HD side view cameras, 150° rear view camera, and a 7” dash mounted LCD monitor which gives a live 360 view around the vehicle.

The SmartWitness DVS system also includes proximity sensors on the near side which issue alerts to the driver of other road users and also send out audible alerts to other road users when the vehicle is turning left. The SmartWitness DVS System comes in a four channel (CP4S) or eight channel version (CRXS).

The SmartWitness products are recommended by TfL in conjunction with FORS and the Freight Transport Association FTA, and are relatively cheap and easy to install.

SmartWitness MD Paul Singh said: “New compliance legislation is often just another extra headache and cost for fleet managers who are already stretched. That’s why SmartWitness have come up with a simple plug and play solution that offers long-term safety compliance. Our Safe System ticks all the boxes, it’s competitively priced, works with all existing telematics hardware and providers, is quick to install and is approved by TfL’s partners FORS and FTA.”

The SmartWitness DVS Safe System has already been installed and trialled by McGregor Logistics in Doncaster who installed it on all of their 67 strong HGV fleet. They were impressed by the quick and problem free installation which had minimal downtime for their vehicles, and also the SmartWitness Safe System integrated seamlessly with their existing telematics hardware via SmartWitness’ SmartAPI cloud platform.
